S.S. Dillow

So... I came across this amazing house on East Rosedale Street a few months back.  I have a quirky affection for all things "old"- junk cars, decaying landscapes, abandoned buildings.

To say the least, this was a dream to shoot.
I noticed this sleeping giant on my way home from work, and I couldn't resist.
Obviously,
Reward vs. Risk was worth trespassing on private property.

It was early summer, and in Texas that means one thing: simmering, tortuous temperatures!
It was hot!  I was sweating profusely before I even crawled through the window {shh!}, and wished I had carried a second pair of shoes with me.  Picking my way along glass shards and split wood in stilettos was not the best idea I've ever had...

The late afternoon sun came streaming in broken and shuttered windows.  Shadows crept across battered floors.  Soot climbed the once fashionable wallpapers.

Even at the time, I had felt very fortunate to have been able to capture this dilapidated beauty.
I'm glad I took the chance; months later, I revisited, and vandals had destroyed the place. I had captured this home last beautiful day...

I have always been interested in Mr.Dillow and his home fascinated me since I was a kid in the 1960s attending Dillow Elementary School.
He died in 1935 and his house was occupied by others until it was acquired by TWU. The university eventually sought to demolish it, against the wishes of the historical community, but then it conveniently burned one night.
